Artist Bio
No stranger to Country. Rod Black of Jet Black Stare grew up listening to all the greats (see Jet Black Stare). From the original country outlaws Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash, to the pioneers of Nashville sound like Patsy Cline and George Jones, Rod found himself tracking down every album he could get his hands on.
When the opportunity came for Jet Black Stare to sign with Island/Def Jam in 2007, Rod committed to himself that he would approach his debut album “In This Life” with that same honesty in the hopes that people would feel a similar connection. He teamed up with Vancouver producer Gordini & songwriter/producer Jeff Johnson; they locked themselves in the studio and dove into the bliss project. The result was an album that one reviewer referred to as an “infectious medley of soul, passion, and most of all, honesty.” Whether it was his search for an escape from the nine-to-five in the epic track “The River” or surviving a near-death experience with a half bottle of moonshine in “I’m Breathing”, Rod chronicled his struggles and successes in a way that listeners could identify with.
Practically born on stage. Rod has toured with such bands as Shinedown, Hinder, Staind, Three Doors Down, Puddle of Mudd, Theory of a deadman, Seether, Saliva, Saving Abel and countless other National Acts. At the end of the day, for Black, it’s about making people feel connected and staying true to the song. As he breaks free with a newfound solo career, Rod Black looks to challenge himself as a songwriter while delving even deeper into his country roots.
Fans of Jet Black Stare’s rock anthems like “Ready To Roll” needn’t be worried though. Rod wants his fans to know: “I’m not abandoning rock by any means. My only plan is to country-fy it”. Does this mean countrified versions of some classic JBS tracks, too? “I definitely have a few things in the works, paving my own way. A Grunge Country kinda thing.” He answers with a grin. 2013 looks to be a big year for Rod Black as he finishes up in the studio and heads back out on the road. Stay tuned for upcoming releases and tour dates.
